A new, high-quality mattress is an essential investment in life. When properly cared for, a good mattress can last seven to ten years, meaning that the initial payment will extend for a considerable amount of time. A superb mattress has immeasurable health benefits. In fact, it’s one of the best items we can purchase if we want to boost our well-being, enhance our immunity, and reap the numerous benefits of quality sleep.

To properly care for your mattress, it’s vital that you keep it clean. Unfortunately, mattresses can harbour some pretty unpleasant things, including dust mites, dead skin cells, and general debris and dirt. If you are prone to seasonal or dust allergies or have furry friends who share the bed, it’s even more important to clean your mattress regularly.

Mattress Cleaning Tips and Tricks

If you want a squeaky clean mattress, follow these top tips:

  1. Strip Your Bed: First and foremost, you need to strip your bed. Take off the sheets, pillows, and duvet. Pop all your bedding in the wash so that it’s fresh by the time your mattress is clean. Wash in a hot wash if possible, as this will kill bacteria and any dust mites. Check the labels on your pillows to see if you can put them in the washing machine. If not, a hand wash of the cushions in a bathtub or big basin will suffice.
  2. Vacuum Your Mattress: Next up, it’s time to vacuum your mattress. If your vacuum has a specialised upholstery attachment, use this. Run it across the entire surface of your mattress, paying particular attention to the seams.
  3. Use a Stain Remover: If there are any stains on your mattress, you’ll want to use a stain remover on specific spots. Many mattress materials, such as memory foam, shouldn’t get wet, and thus, you’ll need to do this very carefully. Add a minimal amount of stain remover to a cloth and gently dab the stain until it lifts. Allow the patch to dry correctly. If possible, pop it out in the sunshine. If not, follow step 4!
  4. Use Some Baking Soda: Not everyone has the space or energy to put their mattress outside. Fear not if this is the case. Baking soda can do the trick. Sprinkle a small amount on the damp part of the mattress, and it will absorb the moisture and any remaining odour.
  5. Vacuum Once Again: Once dry, vacuum the mattress again to hover up the remaining baking soda and any last dust particles.
  6. Flip it Over: If you have the energy and time, flip the mattress over and repeat the above steps. Ideally, flipping your mattress every few months can lengthen its lifespan and reduce too much sag.
  7. Use a Mattress Protector: Once clean, purchase one of our mattress protectors so that your mattress is always fresh and protected.
  8. Use a Fitted Sheet: Finally, use a fitted sheet over the mattress protector to keep things super clean. Wash the sheet weekly to ensure that things stay super clean and hygienic.
