The Bed Shop is the exclusive supplier and franchisor of Dynamic Bedding (Pty) Ltd. Dynamic Bedding was established after a demand in the market for a local, dedicated manufacturer in the retail bedding industry was identified. The first store opened in Bloemfontein in 1994 and, today, with a network of more than 100 outlets, Dynamic Bedding (Pty) Ltd is the exclusive supplier to The Bed Shop and the largest specialist bed manufacturer in Southern Africa.
Dynamic Bedding only uses the best technology, materials and fabric available on the market today to manufacture its beds and mattresses. Let’s take a closer look at these materials and fabrics:
1. Foam Cores
Memory Foam
Memory foam, also known as visco-elastic polyurethane foam, was first developed for NASA in the 1960s and used to improve safety and relieve pressure in the aircraft during take-off. Mattress manufacturers caught on to the pressure-relieving technology when it was released to the public in the 1980s, and soon mattress companies started producing memory foam mattresses.
Memory foam mattresses work by reacting to a person’s body heat. When the visco-elastic polyurethane heats up it conforms to the shape of the body. This gives the mattress its superior pressure relief quality that assists in evenly distributing body weight. It’s ideal for people who suffer from severe pain caused by old injuries or operations on the neck, spine, hips and knees. Memory foam can also help correct chronic respiratory problems by adjusting posture.
Another advantage of investing in a memory foam mattress is its‘no movement transfer’ feature. The movement energy is completely absorbed by the foam and is especially helpful if you share a bed with an active sleeper. Memory foam is found in our Dynamic Therapaedic Deluxe Bed for example.
Gel Memory Foam
Gel memory foam is the next generation of memory foam technology. The visco-elastic foam in normal memory foam tends to build up or hold on to the heat that is used to mould it. While this is what makes the technology work it can influence a sleeper’s ability to regulate their body temperature. When we sleep too hot or get too cold during the night, it can influence our sleeping cycles and sleep quality.
The solution? Gel memory foam. It’s made in exactly the same way as memory foam and offers all the benefits memory foam does with one difference; the foam is infused with gel microbeads that thermally conduct heat and lower the temperature. This offers a gentle, cooling sensation along with all the benefits of superior pressure relief and zero motion transfer that normal memory foam does. Gel memory foam is found in our Dynamic Hybrid Deluxe, Orthopaedic Superior Gel, and Orthopaedic Deluxe Gel Beds.
Latex Foam
Looking for a more natural mattress option? Latex foam mattresses are manufactured using the sap from rubber trees, making it a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option. It offers the same support and comfort as memory foam and all the added advantages of gel memory foam. The natural fibres help to draw heat away from the body and regulate body temperature throughout the night.
Latex mattresses also have the added benefit of being hypo-allergenic – especially useful if you suffer from allergies. Latex foam is ideal for those who want a firm mattress, while still experiencing a bit of bounce, and want to go the eco-friendly route. Latex foam is found in our Dynamic Hybrid Ultra Deluxe and Therapaedic Ultra Deluxe Beds.
2. Springs
Bonnell Spring
This is the first type of innerspring that was used in mattresses. Also called open coils, this type of spring is easy to assemble making it more affordable. The coils are shaped like an hourglass and are extremely responsive (springy) and comfortable. Because of how it’s assembled, motion transfer can be a problem with Bonnell Spring mattresses but when paired with the correct foam materials is offers fantastic support and comfort at the best price.
Pocket Spring
These coils are individually wrapped in fabric pockets and often arranged depending on support zones. They offer superior comfort and near zero motion transfer as they are not attached to each other. Being individually wrapped also means they can conform to the sleeper’s pressure individually which is especially useful for those sharing a bed with a partner.
VertiCoil® Edge
This is the registered name for open, offset alternating coils. In a way they’re similar to Bonnell springs but the alternating coils, squared-off top and bottom, and the way they’re connected gives you a more consistent sleep surface and less motion transfer. The design allows for this coil to be more flexible and supportive and is used in higher-end mattresses like The Bed Shop’s Dynamic Hybrid Essential mattress.
3. Finishing Materials
Bamboo®
Bamboo® is a natural soft and luxurious material that will improve your quality of sleep. Why choose Bamboo® as a finishing material? Let’s take a look:
It’s good for the environment – not only is it sustainably harvested but the whole process of manufacturing the material is more environmentally friendly when compared to the manufacturing of synthetic materials.
It minimizes allergies – Bamboo® fibre is naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic to help keep your mattress clean and dust-free, making it ideal for those who suffer from allergies and asthma triggered by dust.
It helps you keep cool – Bamboo® fibres can help regulate your body’s temperature throughout the night by rapidly drawing away moisture that can build up heat.
Adaptive®
Our mattresses that use Adaptive® materials are treated with temperature-sensitive polymers. This fabric acts in the same way our skin does; when it get hot it pushes moisture away to increase evaporation and give a cooling sensation. The fabric dynamically responds to your body to keep you cool, dry and improve the quality of your sleep.
Purotex®
Purotex® is a revolutionary technology based on 100% natural probiotics to fight allergy sensitivities and asthma. Sensitivity to house dust mite allergens has a negative impact on your sleeping comfort and quality of your sleep. Very few people know that they might have a dust mite allergy or that it can be the cause of their asthma.
Fabrics treated with Purotex® use microcapsules that contain probiotics. Probiotics are a 100% natural remedy against allergenic sleep disrupters. Thanks to friction between your body and your mattress or pillow, the microcapsules burst open and start multiplying. The probiotics absorb the humidity that dust mites need to survive and multiply.
Active probiotics, applied on mattress or pillow textiles, reduce the amount of house dust mite allergens by 89.3% two weeks after application and create a fresh and clean sleeping environment.
Tencel®
The Tencel® fabric used in a selection of The Bed Shop’s Dynamic mattresses is made from wood pulp of Eucalyptus trees. Tencel® fibres are sustainably produced and are an environmentally friendly fabric. The fibres are also more absorbent and help to regulate body temperature during sleep for a better sleeping experience.
* The Adaptive®, Purotex® and Tencel® materials are exclusive to The Bed Shop through Dynamic Bedding.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is widely known for its ability to soothe and calm, but did you know that it can also be used in fabrics as an antibacterial and anti-allergenic agent? This offers sleepers a cleaner and more dust free sleeping environment for improved quality of sleep. The Aloe Vera microfiber technology also has a relaxing and calming effect on the skin and is highly absorbent to improve temperature regulation.
South Africans and Sleep
In Dynamic Beddings’ ongoing effort to improve the quality of your sleep, The Bed Shop decided to run a sleep survey in order to better understand the sleeping habits of South Africans. A total of 1690 people from all over South Africa participated in the survey and, even though it was a comparatively small sample group, it delivered insight into the quality of sleep South Africans are getting. The survey showed that 80% or 1359 of the 1690 of the participants felt ‘tired and unrested in the morning’ and nearly 40% said that their poor sleep troubled them in general. These findings are in accordance with recent studies that have found a rising problem in sleep quality.
