It’s a debate as old as time, proceeded only perhaps by the chicken or the egg debate. Should you choose a king mattress or a queen? This decision is a hugely personal one and will depend on several important factors, including the size of the room, the preference of the people using the bed, the allocated budget, and the type of room you are furnishing.

Here are four essential questions to ask yourself when deciding between a king mattress and a queen.

Considerations when Choosing a Mattress Size

If you’re wondering whether you should purchase a king mattress or a queen, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What Size is the Room? One of the most important things to consider is the size of the room. While standard king size mattresses and queen size mattresses are the same sizes in terms of length, the king mattress has an extra 31 centimetres in terms of width. At The Bed Shop, our queen size mattresses are 152 cm in width, and our king size is 183 cm. While the king size bed is ideal for larger spaces, a queen size mattress is better suited to tighter spaces. Before deciding on the bed size, measure the room and consider other furniture requirements. Do you want to include bedside tables, and do you want space between the bed and both sides of the wall? If so, ensure that the chosen bed size and the other furniture can fit comfortably into your room.

  1. What Type of Room is It? Next, you want to think about the kind of room that you are furnishing. Is it the primary room in the house with two people sleeping in the bed? If so, a king size mattress (space permitting) is an excellent choice. However, a smaller bed might be a better option if you’re furnishing a small child’s bedroom or a guest bedroom. Again, you will need to measure the space in the room before making your decision.

  1. Who Sleeps in the Bed? When deciding on mattress size, you need to think about who is sleeping in the bed and their various weight and space needs. If two very tall or broad people are sleeping in the bed, a bigger mattress with a greater weight-bearing capacity is probably going to be a much more comfortable solution. If you have small children or pets who like lying in your bed, a king size mattress will likely result in greater comfort for all. However, if only one person is sleeping in the bed, then a queen size mattress will offer ample space and support.

  1. What’s my Budget? Finally, you need to think about your budget. Since a king mattress and bed set is bigger, it will naturally cost more money, as will associated accessories like duvets, mattress protectors, comforters, and sheets. As such, weigh up your budget and determine how much you can afford to spend before deciding on the size of the mattress.
